Research lines

The core of Hermeneia research group is the confluence of digital technologies and literature in a broad sense, that is to say, creation and reflection. There are various technological and literary precedents that allow to identify parallel itineraries pointing at the convergence of both disciplines. Hermeneia project integrates these research lines:

  • Hypertext and Literary Studies
  • Literary Theory and Comparative Literature on the Internet
  • New forms of production and the reception on the Internet. E-literature

Hypertext and literary studies

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) provide new tools that need to be analyzed from the perspective of composition, reception, distribution and teaching of the literary work.

:: Objectives

  • Define and analyze how hypertext theory is modifying the teaching of literature.
  • Show how Hermeneia is using new technologies in this field.
  • Present and analyze digital resources as well as the use of social networks in the study of literature.

Literary Theory and Comparative Literature on the Internet

Literary theory as an academic discipline provides the suitable theoretical space to frame our study. The main branches of literary studies contribute to the different analytical tracks and to the different possible approaches.

In order to analyze the new paradigm, we have to consider the text from the perspective of literary history, which provides the textual corpus necessary for a retrospective reflection of the application of information systems to literature. Moreover, an in-depth study of the text using this approach calls for an analysis that relates the literary work to the field of literary criticism. Finally, a study through the lens of comparative literature becomes essential to the field because it creates asort of equilibrium between global and local literatures, underscores the tension between discourses, and provides a sociological and cultural perspective that is unavoidable in research that includes the Internet as an object of study.

:: Objectives

  • Design a cybermap of the discipline.
  • Recruit the attention of “academic users”.
  • Demonstrate the potential of the Internet for the study of literature.

New forms of production and reception on the Internet. E-literature

ICTs have generated a unique textual diaspora from both print and digital media. "Electronic literature" or "e-literature" includes not only printed texts “translated” into electronic format, but also original works created from and for a digital environment.

:: Objectives

  • Study the migration of texts between different media.

  • Analyze differences between digitized and digital literature.

  • Establish and analyze new terminology associated with digital literature.

  • Examine new reading forms.

Ten years after the inception of Hermeneia, two research tracks have proven to be especially fruitful:

1) The analysis of the transformations, migrations and metamorphoses that literary works experience in transition from the printed page to the screen. These issues are of the essence to the study of electronic textualities and digital literature. Among the most relevant topics are genres, support systems, modes of expression and reading processes.

2) The study of literature from a perspective that underscores the relevance of the digital tools used in the creation of the literary work. This approach to literature and to literary studies is a field that has aligned with the digital humanities.
